Dexter has been rehomed!

Dexter is not a CDR dog and has not been evaluated by CDR. All decisions about Dexter's adoption will be made by her current owner; please read information at the end of Dexter's bio about how to apply to adopt Dexter.

Hi! My name is Dexter, and I’m a very healthy, very happy, very friendly and loving, 2-yr old, neutered, male Boxer/ Catahoula Leopard dog!! My family loves me very much, but they’re moving to South Asia and not only is it too long a trip for me, but they say my quality of life as a young dog would be really lousy there. So they promised me that they would find me a wonderful permanent home here and that sounds good to me! I’m about 50 pounds, am extremely loving (and I show it with lots of licks and kisses), am very intelligent, optimistic, and energetic. I love to go on long runs or walks, and to play with dogs, kids, and adults. I especially love going to the dog park, which we do often, although I’m not wild about being in the hatch of the car. I’ve never met a cat up close; I exhibit as much interest in them as I do in other dogs, but my family is cautious, so we don’t know what I would do around a cat. I love kids, and live with an 8-year old now who plays with me a lot, but I probably shouldn’t live with really little kids because I might accidentally knock them over in my exuberance! Also, I do jump because I like to greet people that way, although I have calmed down with that a lot, and my family says I’m continuing to get better at it.

Of course I am completely housebroken, and I let my family know when I need to go out—by pulling on my leash or standing by the door and making a very special sort of sound. My family marvels at how much I’m able to communicate my needs. For instance, when I lose my ball under the couch, I make a different noise from when I need to go out. I don’t bark much, but I do woof when someone comes to the door. I am crate-trained, and run into my crate every morning when my mom says “cage, Dex!” Of course, she always has a bone stuffed with a treat when she says it, so who wouldn’t?? I also sleep in my crate at night, but with the door open. I learn really fast; I’ve been to an obedience class, and quickly learned hand signals for “sit” and “down”. I can “stay” reasonably well, and also “come” when called, do a very impressive “leave it”, and jump onto my chair when I’m told “chair”. I absolutely LOVE food, particularly vanilla ice cream, and I like to hang out in the kitchen when someone’s cooking. My family occasionally gives me vegetables to eat as snacks, and I love fruits as well! I especially like green beans, zucchini, carrot, apple—but only without the skin, and sometimes kale, chard, or banana. My family has vegetable and flower plots, and so far I have not dug in them or in the yard—I’m much more interested in chasing my own tail or a ball or stick, or just rolling around in the grass.

When I was younger, I was a destructive chewer (of pencils, pens, and clothing, usually) which is why I was crate-trained, but my family has been experimenting with leaving me with our other dog outside the crate for really short periods of time, and so far I’ve done very well with it! They are now thinking of testing me for longer periods. I would thrive in a loving home, where I get regular exercise through walks or runs, and trips to the dog park, and where I can snuggle with you on the couch—maybe even the bed!—although I’m not allowed up on either right now! I get along well with other dogs, but would love to be an only dog, or in a household with another young dog and a fenced yard so we can play. If you are interested in me, please read about the adoption process, fill out an application and the rescue folks will forward it on to my family, who will then get in touch with you! Can't wait to meet you and show you what a fantastic boy I am!!!

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
