Winston Has Passed Away

I am very sorry to let you know that Winston, our little senior corgi, passed away peacefully September 28, 2011 in his home, with his foster momma and his sibling dog Winnie by his side.

When we got Winston in July 2010, we found a tumor inside his heart and he was given 2-3 months to live. He lived a full year beyond that, and truly enjoyed every single day of it. Way to go Winston!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone! My name is Winston, and I am a really loving, affectionate, sweetheart of a dog. I am a senior Corgi mix boy and I was wasting away in a high-kill shelter in OH, where no one wanted me, because I'm elderly. The staff loved me though, and were desperate to get me out of the shelter before I was euthanized, because I was such a wonderful boy. Cayuga Dog Rescue has a soft spot for us old guys, so they agreed to take me, and I was transported here on July 15th.

Since I am an older guy, the rescue folks wanted to get me fully checked out (blood chemistry panels and things like that) before they took me in to be neutered, because sometimes it's riskier for older dogs to have surgery. The good vets found that I had a heart murmer, and recommended I have a cardiac ultrasound to figure out what was going on. The rescue folks hoped it was not a big deal, but sadly for all of us, turned out that it was. I have a tumor inside my heart, and it's big, and it is inoperable. Taking it out would take out big parts of my heart and that's not possible. The vet says that I probably only have 6 months at most to live.

Everyone around me is so sad, but honestly, I'm really ok. I've had a pretty long life, and I am in the most wonderful foster home now with the most wonderful foster mom and the most adorable other dog to keep me company. I have soft beds to lay on, a big fenced yard to trot around in, great food, and get this...my foster mom takes me for these wonderful walks! Every day!! Sometimes multiple times a day!! I can't believe how lucky I am it is the most fun I have ever had. But best of all, my foster mom says she will care for me through my illness and that I can stay with her until the end. The dog rescue folks promise to get me the palliative vet care that I need, so that I will be as comfortable and happy as can be, until such time that it's no longer possible to keep me comfortable and happy, and then they will help me to pass peacefully. So, though I wish I had more time, as we all do, I'm feeling pretty lucky to be where I am, surrounded by lots of love and care. It's a lot more than a lot of dogs ever have, and I know it.

Because of the high rate of accidents between dogs and young children, we rarely adopt out our dogs or puppies into homes with young children.  If you think your particular situation might warrant an exception, please feel free to inquire with us.
